And my ambition has been growing steadily ever since. – Salvador Dalí
I don’t know what inspired me to look up Salvador Dalí quotes, but dude has got some gems. Some a little zany, some a touch egotistical, some really inspiring. The particular one above kind of struck a chord with me. I think we should all have growing ambitions. Always striving to do more, be better, push the boundaries just a little further all the time. I have been working steadily on my capstone and feel that my ambitions for it are growing. It’s getting me excited, but at the same time a little nervous. But maybe that’s a good thing. To get nervous from what it could become? I want it to be a big thing and I want people to be inspired by it and want to join in and truly enjoy it. But it’s also scary to want that and push for it because what if I fall short? Create so much hype and then it just falls flat? I don’t want that to happen! But “impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare.” So, challenge accepted. Especially if you double-dog dare me.
So, what has actually happened since my last update? Spring Break. Which is apparently a time when kids pack in a car, roll the windows down, blast their “SB2K13 B*tchezzzzzzz” playlist and drive down south to do irreparable damage to their livers and get sun poisoning from passing out on the beach.
But this is a mythical land. It does not happen in real life.
At least not in grad school. Instead, spring break resembles this:
Except with a computer actually cemented to my hands and snow out the window. Nothing like PA in March with the effects of global warming! Luckily, the spray tan I got makes it look like I just enjoyed sipping Miami Vices on an all-inclusive cruise to the Bahamas. Take that, Spring Breakers.
All of that aside, it was great to see my family, friends, and sit on the couch with my dog while I got down to business with this project, which felt kinda good. And how could I not enjoy working when I have this little nugget by my side?
So, after what seemed like an endless amount of brainstorming, I finally came up with a name for my website. Literally, I felt like every waking (and non-waking) moment was consumed by trying to come up with a name and then after that, a logo. In all honesty, I think my final idea came to me in a half-awake state. I remember tossing and turning in bed when an idea hit me out of nowhere so I reached over to my phone and wrote a note to myself:
And that’s how it started. Simply Vibes.
Straight out of my subconscious. Freud would love it.
It was a relief to finally settle on a name. After that was off my shoulders, I got to work on a logo, which was just more intense brainstorming, messing around with Illustrator and Photoshop, and a lot of texting back and forth with my friends for input (MoDill, Dan, McLovin, Marshall, Rachel…thank you for being my sounding boards). This is the evolution of my logo (and yes, for a while I thought it might be Simply Amazing Vibes and I messed around with color combos A LOT):
That last one is IT. Sometimes, simplicity wins.
I also designed a cover photo for my Facebook and Twitter pages. It’s a collage of record album covers and looks like this:
I officially launched all of my social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) yesterday, April 1, 2013 at 11:30am. I started with 0 likes and 0 followers on all accounts and as of today, April 2, 2013 at 5:15pm, I now have 57 likes on my Facebook page, 38 followers on Twitter, and 6 followers on Instagram (I obviously am planning to devote more attention here, just give me some time…I’m #superhipsterchic I can do it…and if you’re one of my 430 Instagram followers on my personal account…FOLLOW ME NOW).
So, that’s where I am right now. It’s been so fun setting all of this up and I’m exciting to see where it goes. Hopefully after I build up my fan base a little bit, people will start interacting with my posts – liking them, retweeting them, asking questions, commenting, participating in future contests (FREE STUFF, PEOPLE…I have some ideas in the works and you’re gonna want in on it).
As always, if you have ideas/suggestions/comments/anything…let me know, I would love to hear from you. Also, if you know of any musicians who would like to participate, send them my way, too! And until next time, like Simply Vibe’s Facebook page. And if you only like speaking in 140 characters, follow Simply Vibes on Twitter. Or if you don’t like speaking at all, follow Simply Vibes on Instagram.
LET’S MAKE IT VIRAL.
P.S. Just received an e-mail from a manager of a band associated with a productions company in New York I’ve been in contact with who’s interested in participating. THIS IS GETTING SO REAL.
